Help us support and celebrate the opening of a new artist-training and workforce-development center in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Hazelwood. The Industrial Arts Workshop is a place where area youth will find practical, hands-on skill-building opportunities under the guidance of local artists and metalworkers, combined with an arts practice that’s grounded in community engagement.
A dynamic group of artists has come together to create a unique 14-foot-tall sculpture as a gesture of support for this new facility. All proceeds of the sale of the Custom Deerhead artwork will go directly to the creation of the newly-renovated industrial space that will host future opportunities for the youth of Pittsburgh and the new Industrial Arts Workshop in Hazelwood!
The ‘deer head sculpture’ has long served as a symbol of revitalization in urban lore. One local example is the historic “Carrie Deer” sculpture -- a monumental, 50-foot-tall original artwork at the former blast furnace site in Braddock -- , which has become a regional icon for renegade public art and a catalyst for revitalization. During the past 20 years, the Rivers of Steel organization has embraced the Carrie Deer as a tourist destination and a way to generate positive conversations around artistic initiatives that can inform historic preservation outcomes.
Projects like the Carrie Deer demonstrate the incredible community-building power and learning opportunities that arise and thrive through a shared arts practice. The original creators of the Carrie Deer have joined with artists, teachers, and students of the Industrial Arts Workshop to create this new work of art and empower it to promote new opportunities and growth in Hazelwood.
